It is to be remembered that the old Prefecture of Sfakia, until the end of the last century, encompassed areas of what is now Selinu to the west and Apokoronas to the north, and stretched as far east as Asi Gonia. Kandeloneon led the 1502 revolt against the Venetians, was captured by treachery, and hanged. Daskaloyianis led the 1770 revolt against the Turks, gave himself up on its failure, and was flayed alive. Hatzimihalis (Dalianis) defended Frangokastello against the Turks in 1828, and perished in battle.
